The zine for the Rebellion! exhibition and project is now available in my shop and can be found here https://marcdavenant.com/product/rebellion-zine/
Creating a zine rather than a book will hopefully make the work more accessible as photobooks have become unaffordable for many due to the cost-of-living crisis.
The photography for Rebellion! covers a twelve-year period and the archive has over 40,000 photographs of protests of all different kinds. These have been distilled down to just 55 for this zine.
When this project began every citizen in Britain had freedom to protest as a fundamental right, handed down through the generations. Now, with the passing of draconian anti-protest legislation by successive governments, that right has become a privilege, to be granted on a whim by an unelected police official. Many of the protests documented by me during this period would almost certainly now be banned by the police using these unprecedented powers.
The right to protest is a precious flame to be nurtured against those who would casually snuff it out.
